History of Trafalgar Square
This popular square commemorates the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, a British naval victory over France's Napoleonic fleet. Horatio Nelson was the vice admiral in command of the British fleet, and his statue stand stop the square today to honor this important victory for the UK. The area itself was redeveloped in the 1820s under the command of King George IV, and the architecture of the square was designed by Sir Charles Barry, finally completed in 1845. Once known for its feral pigeon residents, Trafalgar Square now bans the feeding of birds and is today used for all kinds of special events and celebrations.
