Battle of Fort Sumter
The attack and surrender of Fort Sumter in 1861, better known as the Battle of Fort Sumter, was the onset of the American Civil War. Following the withdrawal of seven Southern states from the union, South Carolina ordered the abandonment of the US Army from its Charleston Harbor base. In the early hours of December 26, 1860, the US Army secretly moved from its small military command center to the fortress known as Fort Sumter. With failed attempts by the Union to supply the facility with additional men, supplies and artillery, control of the Fort became a top priority and the first crisis of President Lincoln. After 34 hours of battle, the Union agreed to evacuate. Following this Battle of Fort Sumter, Lincoln's call on citizens to suppress the rebellion led to four additional Southern states to declare secession and join the Confederacy. At that moment, the Civil War had begun.
