Known for 2 kinds of fossils, giant petrified redwood tree stumps and thousands of plant and insects impressions, Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument is a fascinating place to visit all year round. During the summer months, visitors can explore the valley with ranger led tours and walks. Start the adventure in the Visitor Center Theater with a short orientation film "Shadows of the Past". On clear days, most visitors partake in a self-guided walk through Petrified Forest Loop, fossil viewing and wrangling through 14 miles of scenic hiking trails. After a day of discovery, tourists can settle in to a cozy picnic area that includes tables, metal grills and amazing meadowland scenery.
